Children’s books recommendations
If you’ve got primary school-aged children, here are a few picks that my own kids have loved recently that may be worth a try with yours.
- Orphans of the Tide by Struan Murray. A boy emerges from inside a whale, and the people fear he’s the god who drowned the world.
- The Baby Aliens series by Pamela Butchart. Funny, deliciously silly school-set adventures that got both of my kids into reading longer books.
- The Last Wild trilogy by Piers Torbay. Pigeons start talking to a boy in a land ruined by a deadly virus. My 11yo devoured all three books in a week while on holiday.
- The Beasts of Knobbly Bottom: Attack of the Vampire Sheep. Creatures in a seemingly boring village are not what they seem. More silly fun in the Butchart vein – both of my kids enjoyed this on holiday.
- The Tale of Magic trilogy by Chris Colfer. Set in a fairytale world where magic is banned, my eldest couldn’t wait for me to finish reading this to her, and ploughed through it in secret well after bedtime… Her friends have loved it too.
